Lysine is one of eight essential amino acids the rest are: phenylalanine, tryptophan, methionine, leucine, isoleucine, valine and threonine. The amino acids lysine and proline are involved in collagen synthesis. These two amino acids require the mineral zinc, vitamin C and adequate tissue levels of oxygen to form collagen. Low tissue levels of zinc, vitamin C, lysine, proline or oxygen will impair wound healing. Lysine orotate supplementation is one of the best nutritional sources of lysine available for the support of individuals with herpes simplex virus infections. Lysine orotate may also be useful in helping reduce lipid deposits in the artery walls, which keeps artery walls flexible.
