Vitamin C has biological effects that are probably more widespread than any other nutrient. Vitamin C is a cofactor of many enzymes and is an antioxidant. Vitamin C along with the fat-soluble vitamin E have key roles in protecting cells against oxidative damage. The highest levels of vitamin C are found in the brain and the adrenal glands where vitamin C is involved in the synthesis of glutathione and cortisol respectively. Many doctors consider vitamin C to be one of the most important stress vitamins. Buffered ascorbic acid is combined with calcium ascorbate, magnesium ascorbate, and potassium ascorbate to create a form of vitamin C that is pH neutral.
