The Forgotten Nutrient for Bone and Heart Health
For many, vitamin K is still a fairly unknown nutrient. Discovered in 1929, it was originally identified as an essential vitamin to aid with blood coagulation. Dentist Weston Price, who was studying the relationship between diet and disease in different populations in the early 20th century, found that nonindustrial diets were high in an unidentified nutrient that seemed to provide protection against tooth decay and chronic disease. It is now believed that what he discovered was vitamin K2. Nowadays, vitamin K2–or the lack thereof–is thought to be the link between the Western diet and several chronic diseases. Vitamin K is best known for its essential role in blood clotting, but it also has important functions in the skeletal system, cardiovascular, bone, and liver health. Vitamin K2 consists of a family of compounds that include MK-4 and MK-7, forms that are abundant in foods such as natto and various cheeses. Recent studies have suggested that vitamin K2 is better absorbed and persists longer in the plasma than vitamin K1 (found in plants) and may be more appropriate for supplementation. AOR’s Vitamin K2 is unique as it offers both forms of vitamin K2 in equal amounts, while most formulas on the market only focus on one or the other. This essential vitamin is delivered in a vegan-friendly soft-gel, which allows it to be suspended in an oil base for greater absorption.
