BARBERRY ROOT (Berberis vulgaris). Native to the mid and western mountains of Asia, Barberry is a shrub with gray, thorny branches that can grow to 9 feet. It is easily identified by its bright yellow flowers. In the fall, the flowers become dark, and produce numerous red berries. Barberry was introduced in Europe and was commonly planted as a hedge. In the 18th and 19th centuries it appeared in the New England settlements and was a source of jam and yellow dye. The stem, root bark, and fruit of barberry contain alkaloids, the most prominent of which is berberine, which is said to have beneficial properties.
