Kelp Thallus (Ascophyllum nodosum) is a large leaf seaweed from the plant family Laminariales. It grows in groups of individual plants, sometimes referred to as underwater forests. Kelp is an ancient plant that may have appeared in the oceans 5 to 23 million years ago. The word “Kelp” was used up to the 19th century, to denote the ashes formed after burning seaweed to obtain soda ash (sodium bicarbonate). Alginate is a carbohydrate derived from Kelp which is often used as a thickener in many food products, such as jelly and ice cream. It is also the substance used to make dental impressions. Kelp thallus (leaves) are a very common component of many Asian dishes, including Japanese, Korean and Chinese cuisine. Kelp thallus is known to have naturally occurring iodine*, which may support a healthy thyroid*, and contains many other nutrients, including Vitamin K, Magnesium and Vitamin B 9 (Folate) * . |
