The common name for Euphrasia officinalis is Eyebright. This name refers to the long history of Euphrasia being used to support eye health.* The Latin name, Euphrasia , is from the ancient Greek word, Euphrosyne, one of the three daughters of the Greek God, Zeus, known as the three graces. She is the grace who exhibited bubbly joy. The plant is an annual,that grows up to 8 inches high, and has small purple or white flowers which bloom in late summer and autumn. It is found in the wild in grassy meadows and pastures in Hungary, Yugoslavia, Bulgaria and other countries in Europe. The whole above-ground plant is used as an herbal remedy. Eyebright has many chemical constituents which may exhibit astringent* and cleansing actions*. The best time to collect the plant is in mid to late summer while in full flower. |
