Jiaogulan is a rich source of saponins called gypenosides, some of which are identical to the ginsenosides found in Chinese ginseng. Planetary Herbals Full Spectrum Jiaogulan is specially extracted to yield a full range of valuable constituents, while guaranteeing the presence of gypenosides and ginsenosides.

Chinese Tonic Herb
Jiaogulan (Gynostemma pentaphyllum) is a member of the cucumber family that grows wild in south central China. Its benefits were first described in 1578 in one of China's most famous herbals, the Compendium of Materia Media (Ben Cao Gang Mu). Jiaogulan was regarded by the Chinese people as a strength and endurance enhancer, “like ginseng, but better.” In modern times, jiaogulan has been researched for its adaptogenic properties.

Adaptogens are defined as substances that enhance general adaptive response. Research suggests their mechanism of action includes modulation of the pituitary-adrenal gland axis. Adaptogens increase resistance against external stressors, have a balancing effect and stabilize normal body functions.

Modern Scientific Research
In vitro studies of gypenosides have demonstrated antioxidant activity in white blood cells. The potential for enhancing immune function has been suggested by several animal studies.

Endocrinological tests with adaptogens on animals have shown normalization of ACTH and increases in corticosterone hormones, depending on dose and duration. These hormones help supply the body with fatty acids, amino acids, and glucose, providing energy to increase resistance and maintain fluid and electrolyte balance.

Increases in performance were demonstrated in mice given ginseng saponin fractions containing some ginsenosides with chemical structures identical to specific gypenoside fractions.
