Weight Loss

If you are overweight, even by as little as 10 or 20 pounds, getting rid of excess fat stores can be incredibly beneficial. Did you know that cholesterol synthesis is elevated in overweight subjects? By reducing fat tissue, cholesterol is targeted and transported to the liver for removal. If an ideal weight is maintained, fasting blood sugar levels decline, serum cholesterol drops, and glucose tolerance improves. Unfortunately, trying to initiate weight loss by dieting has consistently resulted in compromising health and diminishing self esteem. Why do 97 percent of all diets ultimately fail? Why are 33 billion dollars spent on weight loss programs that don't work? Why are we more overweight now than we've ever been before? The average American has gained eight pounds over the last 10 years. Statistics tell us that two out of three people who go on a diet regain the weight in one year or less. Ninety-seven percent will regain the weight in five years. Most troubling of all, obesity in children has more than doubled since the 1950s and average weights for males and females is continually escalating.
In reality, there is no diet that can cure obesity and there never will be. The business of losing weight has become more of a recurring syndrome rather than a health promoting activity. Health is frequently sacrificed in exchange for burning fat, a fact that only serves to compound weight problems and compromise vitality as well. Ironically, calorie restriction, which is the basis of dieting, only serves to force the body to protect itself against the threat of a diminished supply of fuel. This protective mode inhibits the body's ability to release and burn fat. In addition, increased production of enzymes known as lipoprotein lipase (LPL) assist fat cells in scavenging for any lipids present in the blood stream. Drastic weight reduction diets can put this enzyme into overdrive. Months after dieting is stopped, this enzyme can remain abnormally active, making it more difficult to return to eating normal quantities of food without gaining weight. Because the body is engineered toward self-preservation, when it is threatened through starvation diets, fat is conserved for future energy reserves. As a result of this nutrient hoarding, hunger is produced, prompting more eating, and the malicious cycle continues. Typically, most weight loss programs expect the body to respond to a drastic alteration of diet and activity with no prior physiological preparation. Being overweight is frequently treated as a disease. Consequently, the symptoms of obesity are targeted rather than addressing and correcting the cause of obesity.
The notion that only powerful, expensive and potentially dangerous drugs can suppress the appetite and create successful weight loss is not true. For every synthetic or pharmaceutical drug, an alternative compound exists in nature. As more attention is focused on safer, natural compounds, weight-loss formulas will continue to improve. The role of hormones like DHEA and melatonin are only now beginning to surface and their therapeutic implications are profound. If you feel like pharmaceutical agents like phen-fen are your only hope, think again. Mother Nature has provided a vast array of safe and effective compounds that can significantly contribute to healthy and permanent weight loss.
