Bilberry

What is it?Bilberry is the European variant of Blueberry. It is considered an herbal antioxidant, which helps to inhibit free radical damage in human tissue. Modern research of bilberry was partly based on its use by British World War II pilots, who noticed that their night vision improved when they ate bilberry jam prior to night bombing raids.
Where is it from?A close relative of American blueberry, bilberry grows in Northern Europe, Canada, and the United States. The ripe berries are mainly used, but the leaves may also contain beneficial compounds. These compounds are called anthocyandins. Bilberry extract usually contains 15% to 25% anthocyanidins.
What is it usedThe dried berries and leaves of bilberry have been recommended for a wide variety of conditions including bruising, circulation, diabetes, night blindness, and varicose veins.
